Crisp Farms

Crisp is an aquaponics farm that produces a variety of organic greens, heirloom vegetables, herbs, and tilapia. What is especially exciting about this operation is that it's working to create a closed-loop, zero-waste system.

Aquaponics is a farming approach that blends the disciplines of aquaculture and hydroponics in a symbiotic relationship between the raising of fish, beneficial bacteria, and the raising of plant life in a water environment. On a very basic level, the nutrient-rich water that fish live in is converted to a compost tea which is then used to feed the plants. Instead of living in soil, these plants root directly into the water which is full of nutrients and minerals. The plants then naturally utilize the nutrient-rich water and the water is then circulated back to the fish where the process starts all over again.

The Crisp operation is run by Bob Nagelhout and Chris Nagelhout, father and son. They say their business is the result of family tradition, a deep-rooted love for delicious, wholesome food, and a conscious effort to support the local community. It is a way to connect people’s health with a respect for their environment and the promise of a bright, sustainable future.

In addition to being one of the most environmentally sustainable farming practices, aquaponics allows operations like Crisp to grow vegetables year-round! Plus, there is no need for harmful pesticides, antibiotics, fertilizers, or fungicides.
