About the RANCHERS
Hidden River Farms, LLC is owned and run by young farmers Evan Mulvaney and Lucia Wyss, who coparent a couple hundred hogs and a small herd of cattle. While growing excellent food, stewarding the land, and providing a living wage to their employees, they also want to inspire other young people to join them in agriculture. The average age of farmers in America is 58, and they believe that a just, sustainable, and secure future of food is impossible without a new generation of farmers and ranchers.
Evan was raised on a biodynamic farm, and loves growing good food with his hands in the dirt. He started his own farm business, Steamboat Junction Farm, when he was 19, raising 5 pigs and selling vegetables at a roadside stand, and since then he's never looked back. Lucia was born in Seattle, and is a writer, mediator, and organizer - in addition to farming. They met at a young farmers' dance and within two months had bought five pregnant sows - beginning the journey to what would become Hidden River Farms.
The love of farming cannot be separated from love of place. Evan and Lucia farm on 100 acres near Montesano, Washington, at the foot of the Olympic Mountains. The hidden river for which the farm is named is the Wynoochee River, which means shifting in the local dialect of Salishan, on land that was once inhabited by the Chehalis tribe.
